Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
