Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
