Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
